NOEL
ADOPTED JANUARY 2009

Noel (our "Noah Girl") arrived at BTTR weighing 57 pounds!!!!! Noah Girl lost 20 lbs before being adopted. She has about 5 pounds to go, but her new family was so impressed with her progress and saw her great potential that they chose her. Noel grew up in a trailer, not allowed to even go outside to pee. She now has 230 (count 'em) acres on which to roam with her new mom and dad. You know, sometimes the happy endings are just PERFECT. It would be great for any of our dogs to have 230 acres to roam with their new families... but considering Noel's past, we think it was a perfect happy ending for her to be the one to go to this particular family.
TUCKER
ADOPTED JANUARY 2009

Tucker was one of our timid boys. With the care and patience of his foster parents, Tucker became a little more outgoing. He was adopted by a family of three, plus a four-legged sister named Cookie. Tucker met his mom, human brother and canine sister first, when they came out to the Family Dog Club. Tucker's new dad was deployed to Texas at the time. But he's home now too, so Tucker is now part of one happy family.
SALLY
ADOPTED JANUARY 2009

Sally arrived in early May 2008. She had 7 puppies on May 23rd. All her puppies were adopted, and Sally remained at the Family Dog Club. No one was interested in her, because she ran away from strangers. Sally's fear of strangers kept anyone from getting to see her funny personality. When she was with people she knew, Sally ran around playing and hopping into their arms for belly rubs. Sally was so silly and fun we couldn't believe she was with us so long. Sally's fear of strangers prevented her adoption for a long time. In January, a family decided to take Sally home. They are willing to work with our shy girl to give her a chance to get to know them. Sally's finally got a family of her very own.
BUSTER
ADOPTED JANUARY 2009

Buster failed one adoption because of separation anxiety... but maybe he just knew he hadn't met the right family yet. Buster met his second family in January, went home with them, and is now living "the life." He's a happy guy, and fits right in.
SAM
ADOPTED JANUARY 2009

Sam got his chance to strut his stuff in front of a family that initially came to see another dog. He captured their hearts, and now Sam has a new family who loves him right back.
LILY
ADOPTED FEBRUARY 2009

Lily captured the hearts of everyone who met her. Her adoption was delayed a little bit while she resolved an illness and had her teeth cleaned up. Now this girl has a bright smile (a few less teeth, but a bright smile) -- and a new family to smile about.
HANNAH BELLE
ADOPTED FEBRUARY 2009

Hannah Belle arrived at BTTR on September 4, 2008, after being saved from a high kill shelter in Northern Virginia. This sweet beagle girl arrived with two six-month old puppies (Sweet Pea and Scooter), who were quickly adopted. Hannah Belle was adopted by her foster mom and dad, who simply fell in love with her.
BETTY JEAN
ADOPTED FEBRUARY 2009

This tiny Beagle girl is VERY timid. She has been adopted by a couple from Moyock, NC, who have experience in bringing comfort and confidence to frightened dogs. Betty Jean now has a 4-legged sister, who was once a shy girl too -- but who can show her the ropes and let her know her new family is going to treat her well.
EILEAN
ADOPTED FEBRUARY 2009

Eilean came into BTTR in January, with one of her back legs so badly injured that it had to be amputated on January 13th. A number of kind people donated money to help sponsor her surgery. This Valentine's Day -- just about one month after her surgery, Eilean was running around the Family Dog Club fields with the other dogs. She loves giving doggy kisses to her new mom and 2 and 4 legged brothers and sisters. Eilean spent her recovery in foster care... quickly forming an extremely close bond with her foster mom, who has adopted her.
MINNIE PEARL
ADOPTED FEBRUARY 2009

Minnie Pearl joined us in February, and had an application in on her in less than 10 days. This little beagle has big dog attitude in a tiny package. We are looking forward to seeing Minnie Pearl start agility lessons at the Family Dog Club at the end of March.
ONE EYED JACK
ADOPTED FEBRUARY 2009

Jack met his new family at our open house on Valentine's Day. He was adopted the following day. Our little pirate has his own family now. :)
JO JO (JOE B(eagle))
ADOPTED FEBRUARY 2009

Joe Beagle when he first arrived:

Joe Beagle was found at night, cowering in a wet ditch. He arrived in a very underweight state, with poor skin condition. He was loved into great shape by his foster family, and met his permanent family at our open house on Valentine's Day. They came and picked him up a short time later. Joe Beagle has come a long way to get home... but he made it.
OSCAR (NOW "BUDDY)
ADOPTED FEBRUARY 2009

Little Oscar arrived at BTTR on October 19, 2008. He stayed with us for quite awhile -- till he met his forever parents at our open house on Valentine's Day. Oscar had to deal with some skin conditions and timidity -- but he blossomed while in foster care. He is now home with his new mom and dad, and a 4 legged sister.
(NUTTER) BUTTER
ADOPTED MARCH 2009

Nutter Butter came to BTTR from the Portsmouth Humane Society on February 22, 2009. She was a stray, and pretty shy on arrival -- but she is warmed up to people pretty fast. Nutter Butter now has both 4-legged and 2-legged brothers, and a new mom and dad.
TAMALE
ADOPTED MARCH 2009

Tamale arrived at BTTR February 5, 2009, along with Teddy, Timex and Hoover. Timex was picked up by animal control in Appomatax VA. She was so loving that the shelter staff nicknamed her "Sweet Pea." Since BTTR already had a dog named Sweet Pea not too long ago, we renamed her Tamale.... because this girl IS a hot tamale. When Tamale first arrived, she and the other new arrivals were kept separately from the other dogs so we could get them checked out first. Tamale didn't think too much of that plan. What was she doing cooped up in a smaller pen area when everyone else got to run around three acres of fields????!!!!??? That was NOT for Tamale! When we went out to clean the yard (yep... Poop Patrol is a never-ending fun part of rescuing dogs), Tamale was out in the back fields playing tag with the BTTR beagle gang. Thinking someone let her out by accident, we put her back in the smaller pen. A short time later, we found her out and about, playing with the other dogs. We decided to keep an eye on her to see how she was making her great escapes. She's so thin, we figured she was squeezing out between the gate and the rest of the fence, so we put a pole into the ground to block the gap. We were feeding dogs in the kennel, and ignored her for awhile. When we came out of the kennel area, she wasn't in the fields. She was back in the smaller pen, eating a second breakfast. This time, Rita stayed put to watch how our little Tamale was getting in and out of the pen. As soon as Tamale finished her second breakfast of the day, there was no longer any point in her beagle brain for staying put in the boring smaller pen when there were beagles to race and toys to chew... She matter of factly climbed up the eight foot gate and hopped back into the fun side of the fence. Lesson learned: this little girl couldn't go to a home with a chain linked fence... she needed an tall smooth privacy fence! Tamale met a family who fell in love with her -- and vice versa -- and it was a match made in heaven because they had an EIGHT foot privacy fence. :) Tamale has found her forever home.
MADDIE
ADOPTED MARCH 2009

Maddie arrived at BTTR on February 27th, along with Mya -- another beagle girl who looks enough like her that we think they may be sisters. They were strays picked up together in Caroline Cty, Va. Maddie is VERY friendly with people. Any person who sits down is likely to have this little dog plop down in his or her lap within the next few seconds. It didn't take Maddie long to find a new family -- she had an application submitted for her on February 28th. We had to wait to get her spayed and HW tested on March 5th, but Maddie went to her forever home on March 9th, after recovering from her surgery.
HOOVER
ADOPTED MARCH 2009

Hoover's foster mom felt that this little man was more of a "Harley" than a Hoover. We should have known his future by the fact that she unofficially changed his name shortly after he arrived at her home. "Harley" was adopted by his foster mom. He became a "velcro dog" shortly after his arrival. He follows his mom everywhere, and gets along very well with her other pups.
ANDY
ADOPTED MARCH 2009

Andy arrived at BTTR on February 27th. This short leg beagle is a cutey, and LOVES to snuggle up to your neck when you pick him up. His friendly snuggly behavior helped him find a home pretty fast.
KATIE
ADOPTED MARCH 2009

Katie arrived on July 17, 2008, and was adopted March 29, 2009. It was a long haul for Katie-Bug. Katie is a love-sponge of a dog who wants nothing more than to be with her people. Whether you are taking a walk with her or sharing a chair with her, Katie is all about the humans in her life. Katie had a slow road to adoption because she was very picky about her dog friends, and she was protective of her family when guests came by -- until she was introduced. Katie's foster parents decided that the best home for Katie was with them... and one look at how Katie looks at them shows they are right.
BUBBA GUMP
ADOPTED MARCH 2009

Bubba Gump arrived at BTTR on February 28th. This little guy is CUTE!!!!! He has a stocky build and SHORT legs. Bubba is friendly with people and other dogs. And oh yeah -- Bubba Gump snores like a champ. :) It did not take long for this little man to be adopted.
JULIET
ADOPTED MARCH 2009
Juliet joined us at BTTR on March 1st. At first, we thought she was pregnant, but that was a false alarm. She's got a new mom and dad, along with a 4-legged brother and an adult 2-legged older brother who dropped by to meet her and seemed pretty fond of her as well. Juliet is living well, and happy now.
MYA

ADOPTED MARCH 2009
Mya arrived at BTTR on February 27th, along with Maddie -- another beagle girl who looked enough like her that we thought they were sisters . They were strays picked up together in Caroline Cty, Va. This little girl is about 15 lbs. She is VERY friendly with people. She didn't take long to find her forever home.
CORKY

ADOPTED APRIL 2008
Corky arrived at BTTR on January 27, 2009. Corky's owner had rescued her (Corky's mom) and found homes for all of the puppies except Corky. She fell in love with Corky and kept her. Sadly, Corky's owner passed away. Fortunately, Corky has been adopted by a mom and kids -- and she is spending her days with her new family.
MARTHA MAY
ADOPTED MAY 2009
Martha originally came to us in January 2008. She was adopted in late April, but has had to return to us in November 2008. She is good with other dogs, and very friendly. Martha is spayed, UTD on shots, and HW negative (she was previously treated for heartworms, and is now negative). We thought she was pretty old when we first met her, but her vet told us she was 7 or 8 years old... even though her face is gray. Martha is good with kids -- she even took living with a two-year old in stride. Likewise, she is used to living with CATS. Martha is in foster care while awaiting her new home. YAY! Martha caught the eye of a nice NC lady and is once again living in the Tarheel state, going on walks with her new mom and mom's 2 and 4 legged friends. Martha is HOME.
JOHNNY BOY

ADOPTED MAY 2009
Our bigger beagle mix boy has found his forever home. Once Johnny Boy was allowed out of the new dog isolation area, he quickly settled down into a more calm dog (still very much an active puppy, though).
MARY ANN
ADOPTED MAY 2009
This friendly girl, who is never too shy to come up to a stranger for some loving, quickly found her forever home.
PATRICK & SUSHI
ADOPTED MAY 2009
Patrick and Sushi are young beagle boys who both joined BTTR in March. They played together at the Family Dog Club, and are now actual brothers, having been adopted together by a family that will now include a pair of two-legged brothers as well.
GLADYS
ADOPTED MAY 2009
Gladys came to us from Petersburg, along with her puppies (4 girls and 2 boys). Gladys went into foster care while her puppies were being weaned. By the time the next open house adoption event rolled around, Gladys had a permanent home with her foster family.
WAYLON, WILLY, DOLLY, REBA, LORETTA AND PATSY
ADOPTED MAY 2009
Gladys (above) arrived at BTTR with these six puppies. As of May 30th, ALL SIX have been adopted! YAAAAY!
ROCKY

ADOPTED MAY 2009
Rocky arrived at BTTR on January 31st. Rocky was overweight on arrival, but was ALWAYS ready to play. He shed his extra pounds in no time flat. Rocky has some unusual coloring -- he is a tri-colored beagle boy who has some white spots on his back. Several people have commented that he looks as if he had bleach speckled on his back. Maybe he's named for Rocky Road Ice Cream??? Anyhow, Rocky Boy has finally found his forever family.
COLE

ADOPTED JUNE 2009
TIMEX

ADOPTED JULY 2009
Timex was an owner turn-in at a shelter in Milford, VA. All we know about her is contained on the kennel card we received ... which stated that the owner no longer wanted the dog. Timex was well-behaved, quiet and housetrained on arrival.. just unwanted. Another disposable family dog. She arrived heartworm positive, with an eye infection, and had such a bad ear infection that she required treatment for several days before her ear would open to the point where we could put ear drop medications in it, AND had very bad teeth... several of which eventually had to be pulled.
We named this plucky girl TIMEX, in the hope that she would live up to her name... and keep on ticking.
Timex hanging out with her foster sister Norma Jean. They both loved a particular dog bed in the living room. Norma tried to get Timex out of the bed by sitting on her, but Timex always kept wiggling around till Norma gave up and shared the bed.
TIMMY
ADOPTED JULY 2009
Timmy joined us on March 7, 2009, from Caroline County, VA. He was a stray that had been hit by a car. He was still kind of banged / scraped up looking on arrival. Timmy met his new 2 legged brother while participating in K-9 and Kids Camp, and clearly loved his human before the end of the week.
PUMPKIN

ADOPTED JULY 2009
The vet estimated tiny Pumpkin to be about 8 years old, which matches the information provided by her owner when she was turned in at the Peninsula Humane Society on June 26th. The shelter was given NO information about her vaccination history when Pumpkin and her brother, a basset hound, were dropped off. Her owner advised that they were losing their home and had to surrender their pets. Pumpkin's brother was lucky enough to go to a basset hound rescue, and BTTR picked Pumpkin up that day -- a Friday -- because Pumpkin had already been slated to be euthanized on Sunday June 28th due to her age and poor condition.
Pumpkin was adopted by the same family who adopted one of our 3 orphans - the female puppy.
BUDDY
ADOPTED JULY 2009
Shown here (on right) playing tug of war with day care buddy Darcy
Buddy was an emergency case who joined BTTR on April 1st. He had been injured (leg broken) and his owner was unable to pay the quoted fee of $3000 to repair the leg -- the only other option that particular vet gave the owner was to euthanize the puppy. As luck would have it, Bella had an appointment that night with her orthopaedic surgeon at Andersons Corner Animal Hospital in Toano, VA. Dr. Andy Murphie agreed to see the boy and to evaluate his case. Long story short -- Drs. Andy and Robert Murphie of ACAH operated on Buddy the following day and repaired two breaks to his leg. They kept him through April 8th, because of the involved nature of this surgery. Buddy got to keep the leg. His surgery and the accompanying before and after treatments and evaluations was approximately $800. If you can patronize any of the vets who help us like these folks at ACAH, please do so. This surgery price was greatly reduced for BTTR.
Click here to visit ACAH's website.
Buddy was very high energy at the Family Dog Club, but often turned into a couch potato when at home with a volunteer. He met his forever mom recently, and thanks to the great vet care he received, he is her daily running companion.
BELLA
ADOPTED AUGUST 2009
Bella is shown above with Dr. Robb Murphie on the left, and Dr. Andy Murphie on the right, at Anderson's Corner Veterinary Hospital in Toano, VA. This father and son veterinarian team donated THREE surgeries to repair Bella's injured back legs. It is thanks to them that Bella can walk without pain, and can now run. Please consider patronizing them and other the other vet offices that help us save dogs.
CLICK HERE to visit their website.
Bella was with us for almost a year before being adopted at long last. She has a 2 legged brother with whom she loves to go on walks.
HOPE
ADOPTED AUGUST 2009 (AGAIN)
Hope is too big to be a beagle, but too small to be a walker. Hope had been through a LOT on her path through life, already, and we wanted her to find a very special permanent family.
Hope initially arrived at BTTR on May 22, 2008 (the night Sally started going into labor with her pups -- who were all born in the wee hours of May 23rd). Hope was starving to death when we first saw her, and we were unsure that she would survive. Rita alternated puppy-watch with taking care of Hope, giving her small amounts of food every hour. Hope's recovery at BTTR was an amazing thing to watch.

Hope was adopted last year, but was returned when her military family had to move. They had been convinced they were through with having to move... but they were wrong. They received orders to go overseas, and Hope was up for adoption again. This time, she has found her forever home with another Walker/Beagle mix, named Elvis. Elvis has a very similar hard-luck story, and was also saved from near starvation. Elvis and Hope are enjoying life together now.
TEDDY

ADOPTED AUGUST 2009
Teddy arrived at BTTR February 5, 2009. Fosters named him, saying that he was just a teddy bear dog who loved being petted and giving doggy kisses. Teddy was a stray picked up by animal control in Milford, VA -- after he was struck by a car. Teddy's pelvis was broken in two places. Luckily, his scheduled surgery was able to be cancelled when he became healing at a satisfactory rate naturally. Teddy finally gained his dream, and a home of his own. Sadly, Teddy has since passed away from an illness (we think it may have been a reaction to medications, but have no real way of knowing), but not before he was loved and made a family pet. His owner showered him with the love and affection he had waited for, and we at least know he died a happy dog.
THELMA

LOUISE

ADOPTED AUGUST 2009
Thelma and her best bud Louise have actually been adopted to separate families. In each case, they have over an acre for their very own, and a loving family. Each family committed to the idea that if the girls -- one or both -- pined for the other one, we would take them back and keep them till we found a home for both of them. So far, each girl has adjusted well to her new home.
GILLIGAN

ADOPTED AUGUST 2009
Our shy boy Gilligan has a new family :)
JUNE BUG

ADOPTED SEPTEMBER 2009
June Bug came to BTTR from New Kent County on February 12, 2009. She has been SO shy that many people overlooked her in favor of more outgoing and approachable dogs. We knew from a couple who had fostered her a short time that she would warm up to someone once she went to a home. FINALLY, June Bug met a couple of dads who could see the promise of love offered by this shy little girl. June Bug has a new home, dads and a Beagle brother named NEMO.
BERNIE
ADOPTED SEPTEMBER 2009
Bernie was another victim of today's economy. His owner lost his home, and was living in a truck. Bernie's owner struggled to keep Bernie for a few weeks, but eventually realized that he needed to provide Bernie with a new home. Bernie was adopted by a family with kids in late September.
ASHLAND and LITTLE JIMMY
ADOPTED AUGUST AND OCTOBER 2009
Ashland (now Nellie) and Little Jimmy (now Jack Jack) were adopted in August and October, respectively. They were two of the three survivors from a litter of seven newborn puppies found with their dead mother when they were about 3 days old. They were bottle fed, and we are very happy that these little survivors have "made it" and have new homes.
CODY AND CALEB
ADOPTED SEPTEMBER AND NOVEMBER 2009
Cody and Caleb are littermates, and just beautiful dogs. Both dogs needed (need) to lose a few pounds. These dogs, who were born about May 2007, were unable to stay with their owner. He became disabled and was no longer able to provide them with care. Cody came to BTTR on September 1, 2009 and was adopted in September. Caleb arrived on October 1, 2009, and found his own "forever" home in early November 2009. Both dogs are real attention hounds, and both truly seemed to enjoy running the Family Dog Club fields with other dogs. But even running around with all their new-found buddies pales in comparison with finding their new forever homes.
OTTO
ADOPTED DECEMBER 2009
KLOE
ADOPTED DECEMBER 2009

Kloe had a whirlwind tour at BTTR -- 13 must be her lucky number, because she was adopted 13 days after arriving here. Her new dad adopted her during the morning of December 31st. Our New Year's Eve adoption makes Kloe the last BTTR pup adopted out in 2009.
