HAPPILY EVER AFTER

Note from Buddy's adoptive mom:
Emily Jones here -- the girl from Norfolk who adopted Buddy last November. It's been a while since we have seen you at the dog club. I think the last time I brought Buddy by was early this year. I've been too busy to make the trip out to Chesapeake for doggy day care for a while, my apologies for that. Just wanted to let you know that he is doing very well. We are still running every day. I get comments all the time on how laid back and well behaved he is. People don't know that I have to wear him out to get him that way! He continues to be a great traveler and absolutely loves visiting my parents' farm. He's learning to run alongside a bicycle too, though sometimes he gets distracted by squirrels. He's perfectly behaved indoors. The only time he barks is when someone knocks. He makes more noise snoring! He has an adorable puppy-crush on my boyfriend. The two of them spend hours wrestling and play-fighting over toys. Overall, this is definitely a happily-ever-after adoption story.  I'm attaching some pics to this email so you can see how your boy's doing these days. Thank you for matching me to the perfect puppy!

Adopt a Senior Pet

Senior animals are often overlooked in favor of younger pets. There is a lot to be said for adopting a mature animal. With older pets you know the personality you are getting. They are already trained and used to living in a household. They aren’t as high energy as their younger counterparts and their exercise requirements are reduced.

Senior pets are a great choice for an older person seeking companionship or a full-time working household with limited time to train a new pet.

We have some wonderful senior dogs at BTTR that would be very grateful for a second chance at a safe, caring home. Don’t let age discourage you from considering them for adoption. They will repay you with years of love and devotion.

We have a number of senior dogs right now who have arrived at BTTR through no fault of their own. Some of our seniors have included Corky, whose owner died and Martha -- who had been a stray, Darla and Maize were pets surrendered when their owner didn't realize that the pet clause on his new home's lease wouldn't let them stay with him... the reasons are varied... but in not one instance did one of our senior dogs arrive at BTTR because they were misbehaving or anything that was their fault. Please consider one of these dogs. All of the seniors listed above were house dogs, and they all miss being inside their homes. They are also already spayed/neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and many of them are already house-trained.

HELP FOR WV RESCUE

We are asking for help for a very courageous lady in Pocahontas County, W. Va. Her name is Sandy Mallow, and for thirteen years she was the Animal Control Officer for the county. She cared for 20-30 dogs and puppies a week and 30-60 cats, helping hundreds of animals with only a few local volunteers.  She now continues trying to rescue local animals who are starving, being abused, and are neglected... working on her own, with no funding except from volunteers.

Sandy has recently been laid off from her part-time job, and her husband has been disabled since a logging accident in 2002. Yet, she currently cares for 9 dogs - two are the mothers of puppies waiting to go to rescues - and 30 cats. She has four horses, two of whom will have to live out their lives with her. During the summer, she houses 15 dogs outdoors, but in the winter housing is a problem, so she can't take in as many. This month alone, she has had to turn away 6 dogs because she was afraid that she wouldn't be able to feed them. Sand keeps animals as long as necessary - up to a year if it takes that long to find the right adoptive home or rescue.

Last year, Sandy took the money she had saved for her 7-year-old son's Christmas gifts and used it to pay for surgery on a dying dog that would not have made it another day. She has also adopted five dogs that due to major medical issues would not be taken by other rescues and were scheduled for euthanizing - and she helped her vet place three dogs that were abandoned. Just two weeks ago, she received a call that there was a dog that had been abandoned in a garage for over a week and no one would go get her; Sandy and her sister went at 10:30 at night and picked up the dog, now named Honey.

She has applied for a 501(c)(3) and is awaiting a response from the IRS. Because of Sandy's current financial situation, she has requested help with food and vetting.

Her contact information is lastchance_rescue@yahoo.com, or her Petfinder website:
http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/wv119.html (or go to Petfinder, click on "state" on the left, select West Virginia, ALL, and it's Last Chance Rescue in Durbin, W Va.

Drivers Needed!
Can you spare a lift?

We sometimes need volunteers to help us with transporting dogs from their original shelter to the Family Dog Club, as well as to and from local medical appointments and adoption events. If you are willing to sometimes be an occasional BTTR Road Warrior, please let us know, so we can have you on the driver volunteer list.  Click here to email us your name and telephone number.  You can also call Laurel at 757-641-7075 with your information. We'll want to know what areas / distance you are willing to drive to, and what days of the week you are most likely to be available.
