Beagles to the Rescue!

MAIZE - Rest in Peace Little Dog

Maize came to us over a year ago. She was elderly, missing a lot of teeth, almost deaf, and had a permanent slight cough from previous heartworm treatment. Maize never let any of those things faze her a bit. She was a happy, happy little beagle girl. She brought joy and laughter to the people who were fortunate enough to know her for her time with BTTR.  She kept up with the other dogs, loved going for walks, and wanted to stay close to people. Maize never met a person or a dog biscuit she didn't like.  She would look up at you with that silly toothless grin, ask to go for rides in the car or a walk, and just trot around the fields at the Family Dog Club during open houses. She enjoyed taking a snooze in the afternoon sun, and somehow never failed to hear when it was time to eat dinner.

It is unfortunate that the owner who turned her into a shelter last year didn't continue to care for Maize - it was a privilege to know her. Maize was treated for pneumonia in January, and recovered.... but recently started coughing a lot and had trouble catching her breath. The vet tried, but let us know that Maize was dying... and that if we didn't have the strength to stand by her and ease her way, that her passing was going to be very hard for her -- because she would slowly suffocate. We could not let that happen to Maize.

Maize may have been discarded by her original owner, but she was loved this past year, and Maize did not walk alone her final days. Maize has lived in the homes of several loving foster families, most recently with Richard and Caredwyn Harris.

We miss our Maize girl.

Rest in peace, little friend.

Maize is about 12 years old. She is fully vaccinated and spayed. Maize was treated for an advanced case of heartworms in 2006, and has a permanent cough as a souvenier of her survival. Maize is sweet and calm. All she really wants is some companionship and a warm doggie bed.  She is housetrained and will use a doggie door.

Yes, Maize is a senior girl but she has a lot of love to offer.

Would YOU want to be set aside because you got older? Please consider Maize. She has a sponsor for her adoption fee.

Here is an email from Maize's foster mom:

Maize is such a fabulous foster! She is so sweet to our full-time residents and fits in beautifully. She will be the perfect companion for someone who likes slow walks, quiet time by the fire, or anytime snuggles. One look at those big brown eyes and you will be smitten! Here she is in her favorite basket with our girl, Vera. Maize has no problem snuggling up to other dogs, especially when they are in her favorite spot!

May 18, 2009 UPDATE from Maize's foster mom:
Well, you are only as young or old as you think you are. That is my lesson from Maize. I have also learned from Maize that calmness and serenity are virtues that are sometimes overlooked. Here is how my lessons play out. Though Maize's age is a bit of a mystery, she is more energetic and youthful than many other dogs I know who are surely younger than she is. To see her tail wag at the site of the leash is a joy, yet she is a gentle sweet thing that would never dream of jumping up on you to signal her enthusiasm (and that is the lesson about calmness and serenity!) What a love!
