Sally
1.5 year old female
Sally is a small tri-color beagle. She was pregnant when she arrived... VERY PREGNANT. She had her seven puppies on May 23, 2008. They have been weaned. Sally is very friendly, and is being good with the dogs she has been housed with at the Family Dog Club. Sally joined BTTR at night on May 11th. The BTTR volunteers who picked her up got more than they bargained for when they met up with a tornado outside of Elizabeth City. One of her pups just about had to be named something like "Twister," don't you think? The other puppies were all named after a girl scout cookie theme, because Sally showed her first signs of labor during a Girl Scout function at the Family Dog Club.
August 13, 2008 Update: Sally is in foster care while her milk dries up. She is working on housetraining, and just had three good days in a row. Loud or sharp noises such as a slamming door or airplane flying overhead startle her, and she will run hide in her crate.
She had an accident this a.m.... she didn't want to go out after waking up, because a child gate fell over and startled her. Shortly after that, she peed on the floor as close as she could get to the dog door without approaching the location where the gate had fallen down. Her foster mom wonders whether she is sometimes afraid to go outside if something has spooked her. Once she was picked up and loved on (she was trembling) for awhile, and carried outside to be with the other dogs, she began running around again, and was willing to come back in through the door.
If she is in the yard and hears a loud noise, she will hide in the bushes, and cannot be coaxed out until time has passed. Sally would do best in a calm household. She is fine with other dogs, and will wrestle with and chase them around. She's a very happy dog, just easily frightened. She is probably not suitable for a home with very young or boisterous children. She IS coming along, little by little. She does a happy dance at the door when her foster parents come home, and will cuddle on your lap. She likes to hop up onto the bed at night, as well.
October 8, 2008 Update: Sally is back at the Family Dog Club, so her former foster family can take Jack through heartworm treatment. By the time Jack arrived at the foster home, Sally had relaxed a lot, and wanted to play with Jack non-stop. This could not be allowed, because Jack needs to keep his heartrate down, so Sally went back to the Family Dog Club. Sally is still timid with strangers, but always runs to greet the people she knows, and hops onto their laps for a cuddle before she runs off to play again. Some of her puppies come to the Family Dog Club for daycare or boarding. Sally always has a great time wrestling and playing with Cookie (Storm) and Double Dutch.
